MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University junior Thomas Kyanko was named to the 2014 Capital One Academic All-America Men’s At-Large Second Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
“I’m delighted for Thomas to receive this accolade,” coach Jon Hammond says. “He is one of the best student-athletes we have had on the rifle team, and receiving this award is recognition of all his hard work in the classroom. He exemplifies what a student-athlete should be, and we are very proud of his achievement.”
This is the second career honor for Kyanko, a four-year member of the 16-time National Champion rifle team. A Wellsburg, W.Va., native, he was named to the third team in 2013.
Four members of the rifle team have earned a combined eight Capital One Academic All-America honors since 2009.
Kyanko earned his undergraduate degree in computer science in May with a 3.90 grade point average (GPA). He will pursue a master’s degree in computer science in 2014-15, his final season with the Mountaineers.
A three-time National Rifle Association Smallbore Second Team All-American, Kyanko finished sixth in smallbore at this year’s NCAA National Championships. Additionally, he placed fourth in smallbore at the 2014 Great American Rifle Conference (GARC) Championships. He is a two-time member of the All-GARC Smallbore Second Team and also has earned All-GARC Combined Score Honorable Mention honors.
A two-time member of the Academic All-Big 12 At-Large Team, Kyanko also is a member of the WVU Honors Program, as well as the President’s and Dean’s Lists and the Garrett Ford Academic Honor Roll.
The Mountaineers finished the season 10-0 and earned their second straight NCAA Championships title. The team also scored its fifth straight GARC Championships title and first GARC regular-season title since 2010.
