MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - On the second day of competition at the 2014 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field East Preliminary Round in Jacksonville, Fla., tonight, senior Sarah Martinelli qualified for the NCAA Finals.
The Morgantown, W.Va., native punched her ticket to Eugene after posting the second-fastest time in school history in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a personal-best mark of 10:10.25.
"While Sarah's story is not finished, tonight marks the finest chapter to date," says coach Sean Cleary. "Sitting around waiting for the final two heats to unfold might have been the most anxious filled 20 minutes of her life. Local girl makes it to the NCAA Finals in Eugene does not even begin to tell her story."
Martinelli trimmed more than seven seconds off her previous personal-best time of 10:17.38 to finish in 12th place in the event.
Senior Chene Towsend got the day started with a time of 13.41 in the 100-meter hurdles. The time advances Townsend to tomorrow’s finals. The top-12 finishers in tomorrow’s 100-meter hurdles, scheduled for 7:20 p.m., ET, will qualify for the NCAA Finals in Eugene, Ore.
"Chene did exactly what she needed to do. She came in and ran well enough to qualify through into tomorrow," Cleary says. "Chene needs one more jump tomorrow to punch her ticket. We believe she can do just that."
Senior Stormy Nesbit will also be in competition tomorrow. She will be participating in the triple jump at 5 p.m. on Saturday evening. Nesbit ranks No. 14 in the region in the triple jump this season with a mark of 13.07 meters.
The top 12 finishers in each event this weekend will advance to the 2014 NCAA Division I Track & Field Championships on June 11-14, in Eugene, Ore.
