– For the second time this season, West Virginia University junior gymnast Beth Deal
has earned a Big 12 Conference weekly honor, as she was named the Big 12 Co-Event Specialist of the Week late Tuesday evening.
A Parkersburg, W.Va., native, Deal’s honor follows her stellar showing in the Mountaineers’ 198.325-194.925 loss at No. 2 Florida on March 7. Tasked with mounting the beam following a fall, she tallied a team-best 9.875 in front of 4,240 fans at the Stephen C. O’Connell Center and finished fifth overall. Deal outscored Gators Kytra Hunter (9.85), the nation’s No. 5-ranked all-around gymnast, and Rachel Spicer (9.85).
This week’s honor is the second of the season for Deal, as she also earned the award on Feb. 25. She shares the honor with Oklahoma’s Charity Jones.
Two additional Sooners also earned conference honors this week. Taylor Spears was named the Big 12 Gymnast of the Week, while Kara Lovan was named the Big 12 Newcomer of the Week for the second time this season.
The Mountaineers (6-8, 0-2 Big 12) close out their regular-season schedule at Maryland on Sunday, March 16, at 2 p.m., at the Comcast Center, in College Park, Md.
