MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia University track and field team completed it second and final day of competition at the Akron Invitational in Akron, Ohio, earlier this evening.
The Mountaineers recorded six top-five finishes in Gold Division events, however, no team scoring was kept.
Senior Stormy Nesbit finished second in the long jump with a season-best mark of 5.84 meters.
In the pole vault, senior Katlyn Shelar placed second with a season-best mark of 3.97 meters. Shelar took three attempts at the school record, but fell just short.
Sophomore Hannah Stone placed second in the high jump with a personal-best jump of 1.73 meters, while fellow sophomore Marsielle McBeam followed closely behind in fifth place with a jump of 1.65 meters.
"We had some promising moments today. I am especially encouraged by Hannah and Katlyn - both appear to be rounding into shape at the right time," says coach Sean Cleary. "Stormy had some positive moments in the long jump. I believe she has some very big jumps in her before the winter ends."
The Mountaineer 4x400 meter relay team of Jenna Barreto, Alyssa Scherich, Bria Welker and Christa D’Egido placed fifth, recording the best time for a WVU team in the event this season at 3:53.05.
Freshmen Amy Cashin (2:13.35) and Sydney Scott (5:00.78) placed fifth in the 800 meters and mile, respectively. Each girl recorded personal-best times as a Mountaineer.
Freshman Bria Welker placed first in the Blue Division 400-meter dash with a personal-best time of 57.20.
"Bria is coming along in the 400," Cleary says. "As she gains more confidence, we should see her run comfortably under her personal-best time."
The Mountaineers will be split next weekend, as a group will be competing in the SPIRE Invitational in Geneva, Ohio, on Feb. 15, and another group will be at the Iowa State Classic in Ames, Iowa, Feb. 14-15.
