MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia University cross country team travels to Waco, Texas, for the Big 12 Cross Country Championships tomorrow morning at the Cottonwood Golf Course.
The meet begins at 10 a.m. CST with the men’s 8,000-meter race, and continues with the women’s 6,000-meter run at 11 a.m. CST.
“Thinking back to August, this was not the roster I thought would be lining up. The past two months have been met with season-ending, non-running related injuries almost weekly,” says coach Sean Cleary. “That said, I am still very excited with the group that runs tomorrow.”
The Mountaineers have competed in four events to this point in the season, claiming a first-place finish at the PSU National in their most-recent outing on Oct 18. West Virginia posted a season-low score of 28 in the meet, earning second, third, fourth and fifth-place finishes.
Last season, WVU took fourth place at the conference championships. Then-freshman Kelly Williams had a breakout race, finishing in 19th-place overall with a personal-best 6k time of 21:27.9.
Williams was named the Varsity Sports Report Athlete of the Week, following her second-place finish at the PSU National.
“I expect to run our best race of the season tomorrow, and finish with a result that we will be quite happy with,” Cleary says. “This team has not given up on being very good.”
Iowa State has won each of the last two Big 12 titles, while finishing 11th at the NCAA Championships a year ago. The Cyclones are currently ranked No. 8 in the national poll – first among all Big 12 schools.
The top men’s and women’s teams on Saturday are crowned league champions, while the top 15 individuals in each race earn All-Big 12 honors. The top newcomer in each race will earn Newcomer of the Year accolades.
