Track Prepares for Virginia Challenge

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Coming off a successful Big 12 Outdoor Championships meet, the West Virginia University track and field team is set to compete in the Virginia Challenge in Charlottesville, Va., on May 10-11.

The meet begins at 3 p.m. on Friday, while the field events are set to begin at 3:40 p.m. and the track events will start at 7:10 p.m. Saturday's schedule begins at 2 p.m., with the continuation of the multi events and the start of that day's field events. Saturday's track events start at 3:30 p.m., with the sprints and the distance events begin at 6:15 p.m. Admission is free.

The Mountaineers will send five competitors to compete in seven different events. Chene Townsend and Sarah McCauley will be the only track competitors in the 100-meter hurdles and the 3,000-meter steeplechase, respectively. Sydney Cummings will compete in the high jump, while Stormy Nesbit will see action in the long jump and triple jump and Heather Adams will compete in the discus and hammer throw.

All five competitors are coming off a successful Big 12 championships meet where they all scored in their respective events. Nesbit contributed 10 points to the team with a runner-up finish in the triple jump and a seventh-place finish in the long jump. Townsend took seventh in the 100-meter hurdles, while McCauley was one of four Mountaineers to score in the steeplechase.

Adams was the first WVU student-athlete to score at the meet when she broke the school record in the hammer throw with a fifth-place finish, while Cummings also placed fifth in the high jump.
