MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women’s tennis team travels to State College, Pa., on Saturday, Feb. 23, for a matchup against No. 48 Penn State at 11 a.m. the Sarni Indoor Tennis Center.

The matchup against the undefeated Nittany Lions (7-0) marks the third straight contest in which the Mountaineers (1-5) take on a ranked foe. Last weekend, WVU squared off against No. 47 William & Mary and No. 49 VCU.

“Our schedule hasn’t gotten any easier over the past couple of weeks, and we can expect much of the same challenge from Penn State that we got from William & Mary and VCU,” says coach Tina Samara. “Having said that, I expect our girls to go out and compete for every single point. We some saw of that against VCU, but we will need it from our entire lineup.”

Senior Emily Mathis has been solid for the Mountaineers thus far this season, as she leads the team in singles wins (4) and combined victories (8). Mathis, along with doubles partner Audrey Wooland, leads the team in doubles victories with four.

“I know I sound like a broken record when it comes to Emily, but she gives you 100 percent each time out,” Samara says. “She did a great job of providing a spark last weekend. Our team fed off of her emotion. We would like each of our players to show the fire and passion that she shows.”

In last weekend’s matches, Mathis won each of her singles contests and one of her two doubles matches.

“Near the end of our match against VCU, I saw a change in our team,” Samara says. “For the first time since I have been here, I saw our top four players lay it on the line. There was a commitment to competing hard. They showed a little bit of pride. We are hoping to get much of the same this weekend, and hopefully, from our entire lineup.”

The two teams last met in 2008, with WVU’s last victory coming during the 1998 campaign.
