Diving Takes Three of Four Against George Mason

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University diving squads faced off Saturday at the WVU Natatorium against the George Mason Patriots

This was the final regular season meet for the divers before the Big 12 and NCAA Zone Championships.

Sophomore Haily VandePoel won both the 1-meter and 3-meter dives, with scores of 259.80 and 288.67, respectively.

“It was a strong performance today by the women, they have been consistent and look strong as we go into the conference meet,” diving coach Michael Grapner says. “Haily has been consistent all year and she finished strong with the victory on the 1- and 3-meter boards."

The third win of the day was by freshman Christian Parker who won the 3-meter with a score of 284.33.

"The men were also strong today,” Grapner says. “They showed room for improvement and I’m confident that they are ready to go into the conference championships.”

For the women’s divers, freshman Tori Taffner placed second on the 3-meter (226.12), and placed fourth on the 1-meter (213.90). Sophomore Jennifer Rey placed second on the 1-meter with a score of 238.65, and third on the 3-meter with a score of 218.25.

For the men’s divers, Parker also took second on the 1-meter with a score of 270.30, while junior Richard Pokorny placed third (260.70), with freshmen Ibrahim Ismail and Keith Carmichael following in fifth (239.55) and sixth (237.53), respectively. Carmichael placed fourth on the 3-meter with a 250.27, with Ismail taking fifth (246.90), and Pokorny taking seventh (233.10)

The Mountaineers are off until the Big 12 Championships in Austin, Texas. The competition runs from Feb. 27-March 2, with a full recap of each day’s action on WVUsports.com.
