MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – After a first day with modest success, the West Virginia University women’s tennis team completed its second day of competition in Austin, Texas, at the Longhorn Invitational on Saturday afternoon.

Freshman Hailey Barrett was the most successful WVU player on the day, as she scored two singles victories.

"We had close matches," said coach Tina Samara. "But we have to improve on closing out matches and sets. We will go home knowing exactly what we need to work on for our next competition."

Barrett, who dropped her opening round singles match on Friday morning, rebounded in her consolation bracket on Saturday.

In her first singles match, Barrett defeated Texas-San Antonio’s Natalie Hand, 6-1, 6-3, and then, followed that with a 6-2, 7-5 win over Liselot Koenen of Houston.

"Hailey played some solid tennis today," Samara said. "We'd like to see her continue to play the way that she did this afternoon all season."

Senior Emily Mathis, who defeated fourth-seeded Franziska Sprinkmeyer of North Texas in the first round Friday, was knocked off by Ella Taylor of LSU, 6-2, 6-3.

The Mountaineers will finish competition at the Longhorn Invitational tomorrow morning at 9:30 a.m.
