Though the regular season is still four months away, the West Virginia University gymnastics team is already hard at work in Cary Gym preparing for its first season in the Big 12 Conference.

The Mountaineers returned to campus three weeks ago, and as senior Chelsea Goldschrafe writes, their days have been filled with class, workouts and fun.

Tumblers’ Tales will track the team throughout the fall, as each gymnast will take the time to write an update for Mountaineer Nation. Goldschrafe, a Franklin Lakes, N.J., native, is up first. Back for her fourth and final season at WVU, the multi-event athlete is looking to become a permanent all-around competitor this year. She returns as one of the team’s strongest vaulters and provides a steadying influence on the balance beam.

Read on as Goldschrafe recounts the team’s first two busy weeks in Morgantown.

Summer has once again come and gone in the blink of an eye, and now I’m two weeks into my senior year! It’s crazy to think that even though I have been a Mountaineer for three years, I’m about to compete in a new era for West Virginia University – the Big 12 Conference era has begun!

This summer, many of my teammates stayed on campus, which was nice because we were able to do many things as a group. We would always hang out by the pool! We also worked the annual WVU Gymnastics Camp, made dinners together and went into Pittsburgh for a Pirates game.

Although many girls stayed over the summer, I was excited to get the whole team back together, including the new freshmen, on move-in weekend! This is an exciting time for the team because there is so much going on. The team had a very busy first week back. We all started class, had team meetings and went to open practice. On top of that, there was the infamous start of preseason workouts. This can mean only one thing – official practice is right around the corner!

The second week also was exciting, as the WVU volleyball team started play within the Big 12 Conference against Texas on Aug. 26. I went to the game, and I have never seen so many people in the WVU Coliseum for a volleyball game. The energy and the support for the girls and coach Kramer was great! It was the perfect kickoff for WVU, and the Mountaineers are making a presence in our new home in the Big 12.

The start of the school year also means one thing – football! This past weekend was the opening game for Mountaineer football, and the team earned an awesome win over Marshall. It is always such a great time to see all of the fans come to Morgantown and show their support. It was a blast to watch the team play so well in their first game!

Being back in Morgantown is such a good feeling, and it is so exciting to see such a motivated group of girls doing great gymnastics back in Cary Gym. I cannot wait to see what the rest of this preseason has in store as we start our journey together to climb to the top!

Let's Go Mountaineers!
