MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The No. 21-preseason ranked West Virginia University gymnastics team held its annual Turkey-Indian intrasquad meet yesterday, with the Turkey team narrowly defeating the Indian squad, 19-18.
Both squads showed promise, with neither counting a fall on any of the four apparatuses. The coaching staff was especially pleased with the senior class – Shelly Purkat, Kiersten Spoerke, Chelsi Tabor and Ashley Wilson – for their clutch performances and excellent day on the balance beam. Additionally, the coaches were happy with the contributions made by the underclassmen.
The Turkey-Indian meet marks the conclusion of two months of training for the Mountaineers. As the squad moves into its final five weeks of preseason practice, the coaching staff believes the team is more prepared at this point in the training schedule than it has been in years past.
The Mountaineers open the 2010 season with the Gold-Blue intrasquad meet on Saturday, Jan. 2, at 7 p.m. at the WVU Coliseum. WVU beings the regular season with a trip to No. 24 Michigan State on Jan. 8 for a 6 p.m. meet with No. 11 Penn State and Western Michigan.
