ORONO, MAINE - Liz Repella led three Mountaineers in double figure scoring and Takisha Granberry tallied her third straight double-double as WVU defeated Brown 66-49, in the championship game of the Dead River Company Classic Saturday evening at Alfond Arena.

Repella scored seven of her 15 points in the second half, grabbed seven rebounds and dished out a career-best six assists while Granberry had 11 points and 11 rebounds. Freshman center Natalie Burton scored a career-high 13. Repella was named to the all-tournament team while Granberry was named the tournament’s most outstanding player.

After leading 27-23 at halftime, WVU (5-1) used a 6-0 run to start the second half, taking a 33-23 lead that would not get below 10 with 18:03 left in the game after a Granberry layup. A Repella 3-pointer and a Sarah Miles 10-foot jump shot gave West Virginia a 38-28 advantage with 15:22 left. WVU extended its lead to 50-37 after junior Alex Sanabria hit the second of two 3-pointers with 8:54 left in the game and the Mountaineers pushed the lead to 57-40 after Liz Repella hit two free throws and made a driving layup with four minutes to go to seal the win.

WVU raced out to an 11-4 run to open the game by the first media timeout on the strength of two Burton layups and five points from Takisha Granberry, including her first 3-pointer of the game. A Karly Grace 3-pointer closed WVU’s lead to 11-7 at the 11:53 mark.

Brown (1-5) closed it to 15-13 at the 6:24 mark on the strength of two Courtney Lee layups. A Liz Repella turnaround baseline jumper and two Burton free throws gave WVU a 19-17 lead with 3:53 left in the first half. Brown tied the contest at 23 a piece with one minute left in halftime before WVU mounted a 10-0 run that put the game out of reach.

For the game, WVU shot a season-high 52 percent (26-50) from the field and out-rebounded the Bears 30-24.

Hanna Passafuime led Brown with 16 points in the losing effort.

West Virginia returns home to the WVU Coliseum, Wednesday, Dec. 3, at 7 p.m. against Mercyhurst.
