MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The 11th-ranked West Virginia women’s soccer team tied a school record for goals scored in defeating visiting Syracuse, 8-0, Sunday afternoon at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium.
WVU raced out to a 3-0 first-half lead before depositing five more goals in the final 25 minutes to pick up its second BIG EAST Conference win of the season. The eight goals tie the record set in 2006, an 8-0 win over St. Bonaventure.
The Mountaineers received goals from Blake Miller, Megan Mischler (2), Carolyn Blank (2), Deana Everrett, Stephanie Burgess and Sydney Metheny. Burgess and Metheny’s goals were the first of their careers.
“I really have to praise our forwards and midfield for recognizing what we talked about the last couple of days on how Syracuse’s defense was playing,” said Head Coach Nikki Izzo-Brown. “We were able to expose some of their weaknesses and it led to quality scoring opportunities.”

West Virginia went up 1-0 on a goal at 5:55 from freshman Blake Miller. The Mountaineers used a quick re-start to get the ball up field to senior Deana Everrett. Everrett found a wide open Miller in front of the net where she sent a ball on the ground inside the right post.
Sophomore Megan Mischler scored her first goal of the match in the 22nd minute off a pass from Everrett. Mischler beat one Syracuse defender at the top of the box and finished her attempt from 16 yards out.
The Mountaineers went up 3-0 in the 30th minute on the first of two goals by junior Carolyn Blank. Blank sent a curving shot from 25 yards out that skipped under SU goalkeeper Eliza Bennett-Hattan.
“The score is not reflective of the type of team Syracuse is,” said Izzo-Brown. “They are a good team. We were just on target with our shots today.”
Everrett opened the second half scoring with her fourth goal of the season in the 64th minute. Blank sent a ball up the left flank where Everrett dribbled into the box and scored from 8-yards out.
Three minutes later, Stephanie Burgess netted her first career goal to put WVU ahead 5-0. Everrett picked up her third assist on the day with a pass in front of the net where Burgess won a scramble in the box. The senior got off the ground and quickly struck the ball across the line for the score.
Mischler added her team-leading sixth goal of the season in the 68th minute on a through ball from senior Amanda Cicchini.
Blank scored her second goal of the match at 71:37 on a ball over the top from freshman Morgan Betscher.
Sophomore Sydney Metheny completed the scoring with a goal in the 85th minute to make it 8-0. Freshman Chelsey Corroto served a ball to Metheny who fired a shot on the ground inside the far post.
West Virginia took 17 shots, including 11 on-goal. The multi-goal game was second of Mischler's career and first for Blank.
Everrett finished the match with five points in her third career multi-assist contest. She becomes only the third player in school history to record three assists in a single match.
A strong back line guided WVU’s defensive efforts, holding the Orange to five shots, none on-goal. The Mountaineers, owners of eight shutouts, have allowed only two goals in the last 870 minutes of soccer.
Sophomore Kerri Butler and junior Mallory Beck earned minutes in goal as WVU improves to 7-1-3 on the year.
Bennett-Hattan made three saves for the Orange who fall to 4-4-2 on the year.
West Virginia resumes conference play with a two-game road trip, beginning with Seton Hall on Friday, Oct. 3.
