INDIVIDUAL RESULTS

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University track team had several outstanding performances from its underclassmen today at the annual Holiday Classic at the WVU Shell Building. There were no team results.

Freshman Chelsea Carrier won two events with BIG EAST and ECAC qualifying performances. The Buckhannon, W.Va., native easily took the long jump with a leap of 5.71 meters and cruised to victory in the 60-meter hurdle prelims and finals. Carrier ran the 60-meter hurdles in 8.71 during the preliminary before running an 8.90 in the final.

The Mountaineers had two BIG EAST qualifiers in the high jump. Natasha Redman and freshman Katelyn Williams each cleared 1.66 meters.

Sophomore Kristen Loughry cleared a BIG EAST qualifying and meet-high 3.40 meters in the pole vault. Loughry also placed third in the 60-meter dash at 8.05, while freshman Kelly Fortune was second at 8.03. Fortune also took third in the 60-meter hurdles at 9.33.

“Obviously, I walk away from every meet thinking we could have always done better in certain areas,” first-year coach Sean Cleary says. “But we performed pretty well for our first meet with a very young team. This was a good showing for some of the youth in our program.”

Thrower Lashawna Black heaved her personal-best in the shotput. Black’s throw was measured at a BIG EAST qualifying mark of 13.10 meters to win the event.

Other top WVU performances included Alison Spiker winning the 3,000-meter run (10:22), Roshawna Mongold winning the 800-meters (2:33.09), Nicole Lemal taking first in the mile (5:29.55) and Brittany Hohn taking second in the 200-meter dash (26.51).

The 4x400 relay team of April Rotilio, Loughry, Williams and Carrier also took first with a time of 4:02.81.

The track team returns to action after semester break at the Penn State Relays on Jan. 12.
