MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University volleyball team fell to BIG EAST foe Seton Hall this afternoon in its final match of the 2009 season.

The Pirates improved to 12-18, 6-8, and clinched a bid for the conference tournament after defeating the Mountaineers (17-13, 6-8) in a 3-1 (25-21, 17-25, 25-16, 25-13) match.

Seton Hall dominated set one after starting with a 4-0 lead, until sophomore setter Kari Post and junior middle blocker Lauren Evans recorded back-to-back kills to put points on the board for the Mountaineers. Seton Hall continued to hold the lead for the rest of the set, as it posted 18 kills for the win.

The Mountaineers bounced back in set two with two-straight kills from junior middle blocker Abby Norman, followed by a service ace from sophomore outside hitter Kylie Armbruster for a 3-1 WVU advantage. Up 22-15, senior outside hitter Kristina Gallahan took control of the net setting the Mountaineers up to take set two, as junior outside hitter Andrea Miller capitalized with a kill.

Set three went to the Pirates, as they posted 19 team kills with a .375 hitting clip. Meghan Matusiak led SHU in the set with eight kills and a .583 hitting average.

A kill from Miller, followed by a block from Armbruster and Evans gave the Mountaineers and early 4-2 advantage in the fourth set. However, with the momentum on their side, the Pirates rebounded with several runs to regain the lead and eventually the match.

Post led team today with her 13th double-double of the season, as she recorded 28 assists and 15 digs. Junior Libero Bonnie West also had a good match with 24 digs.

Gallahan and Evans led the team in kills with seven a piece, while Miller posted six.

The Mountaineers ended the season with the best overall record they have seen since the 2004 season, when they finished 18-13. The last time WVU won six games in the BIG EAST was in 1998.
