Swimming Completes Orange Bowl Classic

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University swimming teams wrapped up their competition Friday at the Orange Bowl Swim Classic at the Jacobs Aquatic Center in Key Largo, Fla.
Senior Bryce Bohman scored two wins and set a meet record in the 50 back on Friday.
The men’s team finished second behind defending national champions Michigan with a final score of 110 points, while the women’s team finished fourth overall with 46 points.
“We focused on specific areas to improve in our races to and many swimmers were able to do that today,” said coach Vic Riggs.
The meet started with the 200 meter medley relay and the “A” relay team of senior Bryce Bohman, sophomore Jake Iotte, junior Julien Vialette and junior Tim Squires placed third (1:45.30) for the men. The “B” team of senior Jake Querciagrossa, sophomore Aidan Fumagalli, sophomore Andrew Marsh and sophomore Ross Glegg placed seventh (1:49.29).
For the women’s 200 meter medley relay, the “A” team of sophomore Courtney Miller, junior Jenelle Zee, junior Julie Ogden and junior Courtney Parenti placed fifth with a time of 2:01.72. The “B” team of sophomore Jaimee Gillmore, sophomore Morgan Emter, sophomore Natalie Johnsen and senior Eva Burlingham placed ninth (2:06.33).
In the women’s 400 free, freshman Emma Skelley finished second with a time of 4:24.96, while sophomore Kelsey Frantz placed ninth with a time of 4:35.25.
In the men’s 400 free, junior Daeton Davenport placed fifth (4:08.83) while freshman Nate Carr placed seventh (4:12.30).
In the 50 fly, Ogden finished sixth (30.14) for the women, while Vialette placed fifth (25.98) for the men.
In the 100 back, Bohman won the event for the men with a time of 55.89. Miller placed seventh for the women with a time of 1:07.73.
“Having Bryce (Bohman) break the meet record was fun for us,” said Riggs. “He continues to train and race well.”
In the 50 breast, Zee placed fifth for the women with a time of 34.64, while freshman Austin Green and senior Peter Murto placed fifth (30.63) and sixth (31.36), respectively, for the men. Other finishes for the men include sophomore Jake Iotte in eighth (31.58).
In the 100 free, Gillmore finished ninth (1:01.22) for the women. Glegg and Vialette placed fourth (52.15) and fifth (52.72), respectively, for the men.
In the women’s 100 fly, Johnsen finished seventh (1:06.98) while Ogden finished eighth (1:07.12).
In the men’s 100 fly, the team had three swimmers in the top eight, with Marsh finishing fifth (58.52), sophomore Chase Williams placing sixth (59.00) and Green placed eighth (59.51).
In the women’s 50 back, Miller took sixth with a time of 30.96, while Gillmore took eighth with a time of 31.43.
In the men’s 50 back, Bohman scored his second win of the day, finishing with a time of 25.36 and setting a new meet record. Other finishers include Cobbe in sixth (28.17) and Marsh in seventh (28.26)
In the 100 breast, Zee placed fifth (1:16.32) for the women. Carr and Iotte placed sixth (1:07.15) and seventh (1:08.57), respectively, for the men.
In the 50 free, Gillmore took fifth for the women (27.86).Glegg and Vialette finished fourth (23.77) and fifth (23.98), respectively, for the men.
In the final individual event of the day, the 200 IM, Johnsen placed eighth for the women with a time of 2:32.19. Carr took fourth for the men with a time of 2:09.53.
The action closed with the 200 free relays. For the women, The “A” team of Burlingham, Parenti, Ogden and Gillmore finished sixth (1:53.31) while the “B” team of junior Danya Contreras, sophomore Katie Murto, senior Hayley Kidd and freshman Laura Kellan finished ninth with a time of 1:57.94.
In the men’s 200 free relay, the “A” team of Marsh, Bohman, Vialette and Glegg finished third with a time of 1:34.66, while the “B” team of Iotte, Green, freshman Frank Csonka and Cobbe finished sixth with a time of 1:40.25.
The teams are back in action when they host Pitt in the Backyard Brawl at the WVU Natatorium on Jan. 11 at noon.
