Georgetown Match Notes

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The 20th-ranked West Virginia University men’s soccer team will play host to Georgetown on Saturday, Oct. 24, at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.

The Mountaineers (6-2-6, 5-1-2 BIG EAST) are unbeaten in their last nine matches and have outscored their opponents, 8-2, during that stretch.

Last time out, WVU played No. 25/23-ranked Ohio State to a 0-0 double-overtime draw on the road on Oct. 21. Both teams finished with 11 shots. Redshirt junior goalkeeper Zach Johnson finished the match with six saves and earned his ninth shutout of the season.

Offensively, the Mountaineers are out-shooting their opponents, 150-138, and hold the advantage in corner kicks, 84-73. Sophomore Alex Silva has a team-leading three goals and seven points, while freshman Abel “Shadow” Sebele leads the team with four assists and is second on the team in points (6).

Defensively, the WVU back line is holding opponents to less than 10 shots per contest and a lowly 0.051 shooting percentage. In goal, Johnson has allowed only seven goals and made 53 saves in 14 matches. Entering the week, Johnson owned a 0.483 goals-against average, which was eighth best in the nation, and his 0.870 save percentage was 12th-best nationally. Following the Ohio State match, he lowered his GAA to 0.45 and boosted his save percentage to 0.883.

Georgetown enters the match with an 8-6-1 overall record, including a 5-4-0 mark in BIG EAST action.

In the Hoyas’ last match, the team fell in overtime to Notre Dame, 2-1, on Oct. 21. Scott Larrabee scored the Hoyas’ lone goal and Georgetown out-shot Notre Dame, 16-12. Georgetown’s Seth C'deBaca had a team-high four shots in the loss.

C'deBaca, Jose Colchao and Andy Riemer lead the Hoyas with three goals apiece. C'deBaca has taken a team-high 44 shots and is tied with Colchao for the team lead in shots on-goal (13). Georgetown is out-shooting its opponents, 211-187, and holds an 80-60 corner kick advantage. The Hoyas have out-scored their opposition in the second half, 10-4.

Matthew Brutto and Mark Wilber have split in net for the Hoyas, with Brutto seeing a majority of the time on the pitch. He has started nine contests, allowing seven goals and making 39 saves.

Georgetown is under the direction of Brian Wiese, who is in his fourth season at GU. He owns a 32-33-5 mark with the program. The Hoyas returned eight starters from the 2008 squad, which had an 11-5-3 overall mark and went 5-3-3 in league action. Georgetown lost in the BIG EAST quarterfinals to USF, 2-1.
