PROVIDENCE – The West Virginia University men’s soccer team got a goal from freshman Mike Anoia nine minutes into overtime to defeat BIG EAST rival Providence 3-2 on Saturday, Oct. 16, in Providence, R.I.
The Mountaineers (8-6-0) fell behind early in the match when Friar Evan Dufault received a pass from junior midfielder Anthony Petrarca. Dufault drilled a shot from the right side of the field past Nick Noble to give Providence (0-11-0) the lead only five minutes into the match.
WVU fought back in the 36th minute when freshman Jarrod Evans collected the ball in front of the goal after several players batted it around and poked it in the goal to tie the score up.
A minute and a half into the second half freshman Reed Cooper scored his first collegiate goal when he took a cross from Evans and headed it past Friar goalkeeper Jeff Newman.
Providence knotted the match at 2-2 when David Chase crossed the ball to junior midfielder Ian Wexler who scored his second goal of the season from 15 feet out in the 71st minute.
Regulation ended with the score still tied. In the 99th minute the Mountaineers got their third goal of the match from a freshman when Mike Anoia got open at the top of the penalty box and scored his first collegiate goal.
WVU won its eighth game of the season despite being out shot 14-11 in the match. Noble recorded four saves in the match while Newman tallied six in the losing effort.
