  • MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia looked as if it might pull of another ninth-inning rally by getting the tying run in scoring position, but Towson managed to hold on for a 5-4 victory Wednesday afternoon at Hawley Field.

The Tigers took advantage of three Mountaineer errors that led to three unearned runs off WVU starter Tino Medina (1-4). Medina and reliever Todd Dunham held Towson to just four hits while West Virginia managed 10 hits in the game but could not get runners across the plate. Medina allowed three hits in seven innings, striking out seven and giving up five runs (two earned). He did surrender six walks however.

Trailing 5-1 in the eighth, West Virginia rallied for three runs to cut the lead to one. Lee Fritz hit a two-run double to left center and Tim McCabe followed with a single through the left side to get the Mountaineers back into the game, 5-4.

West Virginia also had a rally going in their final at-bat as Grant Psomas hit a two-out single followed by a Travis D'Amico walk. However, Towson reliever Luke Thomas was able to get Jarod Rine to ground out to first to end the game.

Tiger starter Dennis Lane (2-1) went 7.1 innings allowing just two runs on seven hits and walking none. Thomas pitched 1.1 innings to pick up his first save of the season.

Fritz was 2-4 with three RBI on the day and McCabe was 2-4 with one RBI.

West Virginia (19-11) will get back into BIG EAST play this weekend with a three-game series against Connecticut. Game one of the series is Friday, April 11, with the first pitch slated for 7:05 p.m.
