MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University men’s basketball player Da’Sean Butler has been named the Big East Player of the Week, the conference announced today.

Butler, a Newark, N.J., native, earned the award after being named tournament MVP of the 76 Classic, which featured wins against Long Beach State (85-62), Texas A&M (73-66) and Portland (84-66) in the championship game.

No. 7 West Virginia was led by Butler en route to its first tournament championship since winning the Hispanic College Fund Classic in New Mexico in 2001. The senior averaged 18.7 points during WVU’s three-game run, and leads the Mountaineers with 18.2 points per game this season.

Butler and the Mountaineers also defeated The Citadel, 69-50, last Tuesday evening in Charleston, W.Va. as part of their perfect 4-0 week. Butler added nine points, four rebounds and two assists in the victory.

West Virginia, now 5-0, returns to action with an exhibition against Charleston on Saturday, Dec. 5, at 7 p.m. at the WVU Coliseum. The Mountaineers follow with another home contest against Duquesne on Wednesday, Dec. 9, at 7 p.m.

Did someone forget about our win over Clemson in the NIT Championship in 2007? This is the second article I read that says it is the first tournament championship since 2001.

I'm sure their reference is inferring early/preseason tournaments.
